Exeter Great West Santa Run 2011

Santa Claus most definitely came to town today – in fact over 300 of them with the 3rd Great West Santa Run held in Exeter today. It was a sight to behold as Santas of all ages traversed the 1.1 mile city centre route before finishing in Broadgate by Jack Wills.

Ho ho ho! Let us know if you spot yourself in our video or in the gallery below.

The “Guildhall Shopping Centre Great West Santa Run” (to use the full name!) was organised by Ironbridge Runner and sponsored by Guildhall Shopping Centre in aid of Dream-A-Way. For future events see the Great West Santa Run website.

Exeter Guildhall Christmas Parade 2011

This year’s Christmas Parade by the Guildhall Shopping Centre was particularly well attended. So well that the 2000 penguin balloons only made it half way down the High Street during the parade itself!

The penguin themed parade started with a vintage fire truck as it traditionally does which was followed by performers from various majorette companies, panto cast, youth groups and of course by Santa and his sleigh complete with real reindeer. It was lovely to see the reindeer at the Guildhall – particularly the babies who were really cute.

With the 2011 Exeter Christmas lights switch on and the first late night shopping on Thursday evening this signals the start of the Exeter pre-Christmas mayhem. Better put our patient hats on!

3 Commando Homecoming Parade Exeter 2011

Today Exeter hosted a homecoming parade for 3 Commando Brigade which has just returned from a six-month-tour in Afghanistan. More than 700 servicemen and women marched through the centre of Exeter.

The brigade lost 23 service personnel during Operation Herrick 14. Following the march through the city, a service of Remembrance was held at Exeter Cathedral.

Exeter Zombie Walk Halloween 2011

Exeter city centre was overrun with zombies this afternoon, they rampaged down Sidwell Street, through Princesshay and down the High Street before heading down Gandy Street to gather at the Phoenix Arts Centre in plenty of time for the Zombie Ball.

Confused onlookers gaped on as the crowd of zombies wreaked havoc throughout the city centre causing a stir amongst unsuspecting shoppers and bringing buses to a standstill as they passed. Nobody was safe from the undead antics… buses, shop staff and delivery trucks were the focus of zombie attention, who left a trail of bloody hand-prints and confused stares wherever they went.

It was an awesome sight… top marks to the undead and organisers – please do it again next year!

Saturday Night Fever Flashmob

FloorPlay were in Princesshay Square this morning with a particularly impressive flashmob style Saturday Night Fever dance. We thought it was really well executed and were surprised by just how many took part after the numbers built up.

They continued to dance throughout the day to a range of material promoting the jive classes they run throughout Devon. For more information see the Floorplay website.

Princesshay in 2005

We posted these two photos to Twitter earlier but decided to reproduce them here as well for archive purposes. They show the demolition of the old Princesshay in April 2005, which represented the start of the work to build the new Princesshay we all know.
